Terchen Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa

Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa was the "manifestation," of King Trisong Deutsen's son, Murub Tsepo also known as Yeshe Rolpe Tsal or Lhase Lotsawa. Another of his former lives was the great tertön, Sangye Lingpa, who revealed the Lama Gongdu. Padmasambhava hid many treasures and sealed them with a sacred aspiration to be revealed at a certain time for the benefit of future generations by a certain tertön, an emissary of Padmasambhava himself. One of these incarnated tertöns was Chokgyur Lingpa who appeared in this world in 1828, born in the eastern part of Tibet in Nangchen, Kham. His name, birthplace, the chief recipients of his revealed teachings and the effect of the spread of his teachings were all prophesied by Padmasambhava.
Chokgyur Lingpa is the owner of seven transmissions and is regarded as the universal monarch of all tertöns. One of the reasons for this is that no other tertön has revealed a teaching that includes the Space Section (Longdey) of Dzogchen. There are several Mind Section (Semdey) revelations and all major tertöns have revealed the Instruction Section (Menngakdey), but only Chokgyur Lingpa transmitted the Space Section. This is why the Dzogchen Desum is considered the most extraordinary terma that he ever revealed.

Chokgyur Lingpa's consort was Dechen Chödrön and Padmasambhava predicted that their three children would be emanations of the three family lords: Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri and Vajrapani. The Manjushri emanation was supposed to be Wangchok Dorje, the Avalokiteshvara emanation Tsewang Norbu and the Vajrapani emanation, Konchok Paldron.

The revealed termas of Chokgyur Lingpa have had an immense impact on Vajrayana Buddhism in the 150 years that followed and are being widely practiced throughout the world.

Chokling Tersar is a collection of terma teachings revealed by Chokyur Lingpa. These extraordinarily clear and profound heart teachings along with their assocated teachings are contained in a body of literature filling more than forty large volumes. Both the Kagyü and the Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism practice these teachings.
